Let's party on!

Let’s be real, as kids, we all would have loved to have birthday parties, RIGHT?

Well, that’s subjective, some people might not have liked it for their own reasons and that’s alright.

So, this is for rest that loved having birthday parties.

I’m going to be honest, I didn’t exactly know the significance of born day and the whole cost of birthday parties until I had my 21st birthday celebration. Back then, I only knew that I get to dress up prettily and get PRESENTS! YES, that’s my favourite part of all 😃

My parents would go ‘ooh aah’ over birthday parties and no biasness, they did the same for all my siblings. Well, maybe until I came along :P Even then, something happened when I was 6 that my parents stopped having birthday parties after that. I used to call it the most embarrassing moment in my life until I realised it is actually a funny story to tell my future kids. There is nothing to be embarrassed about, coming to think of it, these are just moments in life. Not the happiest but definitely the silliest and it’s worth a laugh.

As all other stories begin, this one begins like this…

I was turning 6 and my birthday is on 17th August (yes, send me presents, please 😝) If my birthday fell on a weekday, she’d have the party on a weekend. None of my friends from kindergarten were invited really but I had a lot friends from my neighbourhood. Perks of living in an apartment, I basically knew all the kids on my floor, the upper floor and the lower floor. I had plenty of relatives and family friends too.

As any other birthday party goes, my parents asked what type of cake and dress I wanted. I can’t remember the dress colour but I think it was red. I am what my family would call ‘crazy cake lady’. I specifically asked for a heart shaped chocolate cake. I have never had a heart shaped cake before and I was so excited about it. It had to be preordered and things were going on well.

The day arrived and the guests started arriving. I wasn’t in my birthday dress yet but I was playing around on the red sofa set we had. I liked that the sofa set was against the display cabinet in our living room. The display cabinet had some of the best toys. I used to stand on the sofa set to reach for the dolls and miniature human figures that was on the cabinet for my pretend play. On that day, I was basically having some pretend play and jumping about on the sofa.

My mum used to make cookies and tidbits at home for the party. So, the dining room was probably occupied. My dad collected the cake from the bakery AND… put it on the sofa that I was playing on. If you’re smart enough, please put two and two together.

I THINK I heard my mum asking me to get of the sofa but I was a stubborn child. I kept playing AND… POM! Guess what? I accidentally stepped on the cake. YES, I kid you not, there was literally my footprint in the middle of the cake. Some guests witnessed it and my mum came from the kitchen. I was crying already by then because I knew my mum was gonna give me a piece of her mind. She saw my teary face and stopped herself. She got me out of the mess and straight into the bathroom. I was crying throughout my bath.

I couldn’t believe she didn’t scold me. Bet it was because of my birthday, otherwise we all know what would have happened. She acted fast as she called my cousin to get a new cake on the way to the party. I was guilt ridden and I had a sad face on ☹ until I saw my cousin with a new cake. I was a kid, instant gratification worked best then.

Don’t worry, that was the last year I had a birthday party. This event has been referenced on many different family occasions. My siblings promise they are gonna tell this embarrassing story to my future guy. I thought I would let the whole world know before that happened. Fast forward to now, I had my 21st birthday celebration that I didn’t want but it was just a family tradition to have one. The whole preparation fiasco and the cost, I am not joking when I say we, the brown people, tend to overdo things.

Now that I am older, the best part about those birthday parties from when I was young are stacks of old photo albums. My mum has photo albums for each of my siblings’ birthdays in chronological order. Looking back at old photos is my favourite way to spend time with my cousins now.

I am sure many would have their own flashes of memories from their birthday parties. Go down that road and look back at those happy moments. It will put a smile on your face. It definitely made me laugh now even after almost 20 years. I hope it made you laugh too, after all, laughter is the best medicine, they say.
